About Artist Wilson Souza - Wilson Souza was born in Kayyar, in Kasargod district and is an alumnus of Mahasala School of Art, Mangaluru. He has been honoured at the Konkani Janapad Utsav by the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy and conferred the Sadhana Award by Emirates Konkans.
Wilson Souza’s powerful strokes in nudes, azure blues, olive greens, and rusts are an enduring manifestation of his ability to observe and skillful rendering of urban scenes. The artist magnifies the beauty of his subjects through the use of an exuberant palette and thick sweeping brushstrokes.
The figures of men and women are shown engaged in celebrations and festivities with musical trance and a devout sense of belongingness. The artist deliberately keeps the faces clear of distinct features, to contain the mystery which he has captured in thick layers of composition. The use of the female form as a metaphor for nature’s bounty has been frequently employed by the artist.
Although the themes of his paintings are familiar, the artist has skilfully rendered them in a novel manner, pulsating with energy that is instantaneously felt. The simplicity and rawness of these creations are what makes them desirable.
